IIMs are union government-funded institutions, initially they were established by the recommendation of the planning commission to manage massive industrial management and industrial relations in various fields. The government of India funds these national importance universities to make them world-class universities. IIMs are autonomous institutions, so they can have their own fee structure academic curriculum, without government interference even though they are funded by the government.
